We spent our second day out at Robben Island, where political
prisoners were grimly incarcerated by white South Africans during
the difficult lengthy struggle to abolish apartheid. To our amazement,
the tour guides here are both former prisoners and former guards,
who explain what went on here, including the dreadful punishments
and work details in the lime quarry in the blazing sun. Nelson Mandela
was a prisoner here for almost 20 years until 1990 (photos). (As
you know he became president of South Africa in 1994 and his party
prevails today.)
